Leading Australia striker and midfielder Nathan Eglington has a torn groin muscle and will miss the Beijing Olympics for the defending gold medal champions in men's field hockey.
A scorer of 47 goals in 136 international matches, Eglington, a member of the winning side from the 2004 Athens Olympics, said Thursday he was "shattered" by the news.
"Obviously this is the most devastating injury that I have suffered throughout my career," Eglington said. "I don't think it has really sunk in yet that I will be missing the games."
Eglington, 27, suffered the injury in training over a month ago and scans showed he completely tore one tendon and another was hanging by a thread. He is expected to be off training and competition for up to six months.
