Stuart MacGill took four wickets as Australia eventually dismissed a Jamaica XI for 297 on the opening day of their tour match at the Trelawany Multi-Purpose Stadium.
Australia were 0-89 in reply before bad light stopped play on day one of the three-day match, with Phil Jacques on 44 and Simon Katich on 35.
Former West Indian wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh was the star of the day, after he smashed a superb 111 not out, to put the hosts in a more than competitive position.
After being dropped by Brad Haddin on seven, Baugh continued to frustrate the Australian bowlers, striking nine fours and two sixes in his 112-ball innings that included a stubborn 89-run partnership with Gavin Wallace (22) for the ninth wicket.
The home team won the toss and got off to a decent start with a 51-opening stand, before breakthroughs from Stuart Clark and Mitchell Johnson gave Australia the edge.
MacGill was the best bowler on the day, finishing with the figures of 4-79, while Johnson (2-64) and Simon Katich (2-51) also took multiple wickets.
In a sign they will pick a specialist batsman to fill Michael Clarke's place for the first Test next Thursday, Australia chose Katich and Brad Hodge, while Ashley Noffke and Matthew Hayden were left out.
