Casey Stoner has posted the fastest time after the opening two practice sessions of the San Marino GP in Misano on Friday.
The Australian world champion had been heading the timesheets for almost the entire first session but was forced to pull a late 1:35.422 to edge out American Colin Edwards by two one-hundredths of a second.
Home-town hero Alex de Angelis got off to a good start to post the third fastest time, while Jorge Lornezo was next best.
Championship leader Valentino Rossi could only manage the fifth fastest time, just over one second slower than Stoner.
Aussie Chris Vermeulen finished a strong eighth, with Nicky Hayden, Andrea Dovizioso, James Toseland and Shinya Nakano completing the top 10.
The third Aussie in the field, Anthony West, was once again bringing up the rear of the 17-man field.
Stoner bettered his time in the second practice session, but Rossi was right behind him posting the second fastest time of the afternoon.
There was also improvement for Vermeulen, who had the fifth fastest time.
Randy de Puniet also improved remarkably to be fourth fastest, while the rest of the top was the same as the first session.
